"Scarlet Ibis"

"Symbolism"

The importance of symbolism in the short story "Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst uses a bird to show how delicate trust is very weak. The definition of symbol is "something such as an object, picture, written word, sound, or particular mark that represents something else by association, resemblance, or convention. For example, a red octagon may be a symbol for "STOP." On maps, crossed sabers may indicate a battlefield. Numerals are symbols for numbers (amounts). All language consists of symbols. Personal names are symbols representing individuals".

The symbol that is shown in the "Scarlet Ibis" is the symbol of trust and they used a Ibis bird to show how trust is a very delicate subject. This short story shows "The knowledge that our plans had come to nothing was bitter, and that streak of cruelty within me awakened. I ran as fast as I could, leaving him far behind with a wall of rain dividing us. Soon I could hear his voice no more." This example fro the text shows me that we need to handle the topic of trust especially when people have very little trust in others. Another example for this short story "Brother, Brother, don't leave me! Don't leave me!"this shows that even if your family a person can still have a little or no trust for each other at all it shows that at all times trust needs to be built in order for some one to truly understand the meaning of trust.

This short story shows me how to truly deal with the trust in others.I really didn't discover anything about myself in this short story because I already know a lot about myself. the symbol that represents me and my life is the PR flag this flag shows my culture and my ethicist. Another symbol that represents is my music and everything that has to deal with music. Reasons being is that both these symbols show a lot about me and my character.
